Second Gear: Shifting to Success

On the Tools | Term 3, Week 1 Highlights

Welcome team!

It’s our first week back, and we’re excited to welcome both new and returning faces. With 15 young people enrolled in the program, the workshop is buzzing with energy!

This term we’re stepping up from e-scooters to e-bikes, giving our young people the chance to tackle more complex builds and further develop their skills in hands-on manufacturing. Alongside welding and other on-the-tools projects, this work is about more than building bikes, it’s about building the confidence, job skills, and work readiness.

New faces and a visit from WAPOL!

The week has been full of highlights. On Monday, we were proud to host Megan and June from WAPOL, to see the program in action. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the positive outcomes their support is helping us achieve.

We also welcomed two new team members this week - Christian, Youth Support Coordinator, and Jordan, Apprentice Master. Their experience and mentoring are already proving so valuable as our young people step into the workshop.

Laying the Foundations for Future Opportunities

This week our young people rolled up their sleeves for a paving course with North Regional TAFE trainer Tony, gaining much more than practical experience. Learning how to plan, prepare, and lay pavers gave participants a chance to build confidence with tools, work as a team, and take pride in creating something lasting.

Beyond the new pathway they laid at our site, the real value is in the skills they carry forward. Paving is part of a nationally recognised skill set, giving participants a credential that strengthens their resumes and makes them more competitive when applying for jobs!

A Day at the Camel Farm

On Thursday, our young people enjoyed an industry visit to Red Sun Camels. Meeting these remarkable animals up close was a highlight, camels are gentle giants, known for their calm nature and curious personalities!

Camels are also one of Broome’s biggest tourism drawcards, with thousands of visitors each year eager to experience a ride along Cable Beach. Seeing firsthand how John and his team care for and work with the camels gave our participants a deeper understanding of the local tourism industry and the skills involved in keeping it thriving!
