Second Gear: Shifting to Success

On the Tools | Term 3, Week 2 Highlights

Second Gear in Full Swing - Skills, Surf & Future Pathways!

It was a big week for our Second Gear: Shifting to Success crew; on the tools, behind the drone controls, touring TAFE, and even hitting the surf with Ocean Heroes!

We started the week with a hands-on digital tech session led by Shane Landers, where participants explored interactive stations featuring drones! The activities built problem-solving skills, while sparking interest in digital careers across the resources and energy sectors.

Industry Visit to North Regional TAFE

On Tuesday, we visited Aboriginal Training Services at TAFE, where the group toured various trade areas, met trainers, and gained insight into future training and job pathways, from hairdressing to heavy machinery.

Thank you to Kera and the team at TAFE who always welcome us and give us a fantastic industry visit.

Rural Skills: Chainsaw Operation

On Wednesday and Thursday, our crew completed a two-day Chainsaw Skillset with trainer Tony. Over the two days, they learned how to safely operate and maintain a chainsaw, assess and prepare cutting sites, and apply key safety practices, skills that open doors to future work in land care, agriculture, and outdoor industries.

Thank you Tony for your patience with us and teaching our young people valuable new skills!

A Day at the beach with Ocean Heroes

We wrapped up the week with a beach day on Friday alongside the team from Ocean Heroes, a not-for-profit that uses surfing to build confidence and connection for young people, particularly those with autism or mental health challenges.

The sun was shining, the waves were rolling, and our participants shredded out there in the surf!!
